The lower of the two chambers is empty. A narrowboat is entering the top chamber, which will then empty into this one, and the boat will move forwards. This lock will then be re-emptied, the gates opened, and the boat will proceed towards the junction with the Trent and Mersey Canal. The drop in level is 19ft 3in (nearly six metres). Recent housing has been built below the canal embankment on the right.
