Medieval Hall
What is now called the Medieval Hall is the former Great Hall of the Deanery, built in about 1220 and therefore contemporary with the construction of the cathedral. It is now a small museum, lecture theatre and exhibition space. On the day I was there there was a display of Persian Carpets, on sale from £1,000 to £5,000.

Houses of The Close: no. 58, The Wardrobe
There has been a house here on this site since 1254, although the present building is mainly C15. During the C17 it was heightened, and further altered during the C19. Its odd name is derived from the fact the present building stands on the site of a medieval bishop's storehouse. Grade II* Listed, the building currently houses The Rifles, the official museum of The Royal Berkshire, and Wiltshire Regiments.

Houses of The Close: no. 68, Myles Place
Arguably the most stately home in The Close, it was rebuilt in 1720 on the site of an early canonical house, known in the C16 as Myles Place. It is Grade I Listed.

Houses of The Close: no. 65, The King's House
This is essentially a C13/C14 building that was altered in the C16 and C17. English Heritage are rather scathing about the modern additions, which in their opinion has destroyed the character of the front. Nevertheless, it is still a fine Grade I Listed building, that currently houses the acclaimed Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum. Its past history records that it was once the residence of the Abbot of Sherborne, and after the Reformation, of Sir Thomas Sadler, who hosted a visit of King James I, after whom the house was then named. In more recent times the Diocesan Training College for Schoolmistresses was established here in 1849, later becoming the College of Sarum St Michael.
