Salisbury garage premises circa 1930
George Victor Searle's garage business at 67A Rampart Road operated in Salisbury during the late 1920s to the early thirties. The garage was located at the bottom of Milford Hill at its junction with Rampart Road. Along with many others, the building was demolished in the 1960s when the Churchill Way flyover was constructed. I welcome any suggestions as to the identity of the vehicle in the photo, although I think it's probably a Model T Ford Roadster, possibly modified. UPDATE: having contacted the Model T Ford Register www.modeltregister.co.uk (a club for Model T Ford enthusiasts) they concluded that it is not a Model T. They very kindly did some research on my behalf and a consensus of their enthusiasts concluded that it may be a Chevrolet FB with an English body.

Milford Street Bridge Jubilee Mural
Milford Street Bridge is a large flyover, which carries the Salisbury’s ring-road (A36). It was built in the early 1970s. Following the success of the first mural (Image]) painted on the southern wall of the bridge by The Milford Street Bridge Project http://www.milfordstreetbridgeproject.org.uk/index.php in 2011, a second mural was painted on the Northern Wall in 2012, to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. This mural shows how Salisbury has celebrated royal events over the years. The foreground of the mural is a framework of trees representing those planted in the Market Square and Victoria Park to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. Photographs of the individual scenes within the mural can be seen at http://www.milfordstreetbridgeproject.org.uk/content/category/the-murals/the-jubilee-mural/scenes-in-the-jubilee-mural (Milford Street Bridge Project).

Milford Street mural
The 'High Street' scene on the underpass walls certainly brightens up the area. The various shops and characters are all local and contemporary. For example, (l to r) there is a cow drover (or cow walloper as known locally!), children playing with hoops and trolleys, a typical Victorian house from Rampart Road, the Invicta Leatherworks, Eileen O'Leary (who along with her new husband Neil MacNamee {the Lipton's Grocery manager} set sail on the Titanic and met a watery grave), a popular inn called the Crystal Fountain and finally there's 'Trunky the Barrel Snatcher' - a local man who made easy work of shifting beer barrels for a living. See Image] for the location.

The Milford Street Bridge Mural
Milford Street Bridge is a large flyover, which carries the Salisbury’s ring-road (A36). It was built in the early 1970s. In 2010 The Milford Street Bridge Project http://www.milfordstreetbridgeproject.org.uk/index.php , a community heritage and arts project based in Salisbury, was granted permission to paint a mural on one of its bare concrete walls. The mural, painted on the southern wall of the bridge in 2011 , shows buildings and people from the time before the ring road was constructed. A second mural (Image]) was painted on the Northern Wall in 2012, to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. More photographs of the individual buildings and people in the mural can be seen at http://www.milfordstreetbridgeproject.org.uk/content/category/the-murals/the-milford-street-bridge-mural (Milford Street Bridge Project).

Milford Hill, Salisbury 1986
The view West towards Milford Street from Milford Hill, the ugly Churchill Way elevated ring road dominating the scene. Built in the 1960s, the flyover runs parallel with Rampart Road whose junction with Milford Hill can be seen in the photo. A number of old buildings were demolished in order to construct it, including at least 5 buildings here on the North side. A view from the same viewpoint of c.1914 show clearly what has been lost: https://media.geograph.org.uk/files/7eabe3a1649ffa2b3ff8c02ebfd5659f/010b_Milford_Hill-original.jpg

Underpass mural
As the A36 Churchill Way East roars overhead, Milford Street passes beneath the traffic. Taking advantage of the plain concrete large and cheerful murals have been painted in the shadows of the dual carriageway; see Image] for a glimpse.
