The White Horse, 19 Market Place, Romsey
Late 15th or early 16th century Grade II Listed inn built on site of earlier medieval inn of which stone cellars survive. Of significant historical importance The White Horse has been Romsey's principal inn since the medieval period, and may have been a guest house for the Abbey, founded in the 9th century. In the hands of Macdonald Hotels at the turn of the 21st century it is now (2019) part of Silks Hotels. Directory entries include; 1784 Charles Sibley (Poft Chaife) - post-chaise is a fast carriage for passengers and/or post; 1792 John Quinton; 1828 Joseph Phillips (& posting house); 1844 Samual & Robert Cocks (& posting); 1851-1859 Mrs Sarah Cocks (posting) - spelt Cox in 1852; 1865 no victualler given; 1875 Charles Robert Prangnell; 1889-1898 James Bignal (& posting house); 1911 Richard Bowen.

Coronation crowd in Market Place, Romsey
Despite the heavy rain, people were still out in Romsey in Market Place to watch King Charles III's coronation on the 6th of May, 2023. Lots of waterproof jackets and umbrellas!
The festivities included face painting, several food vans and a few stalls, and the main event televised on a large screen in the centre of the square. The statue of Lord Palmerston was decorated with a crown, and the square was adorned with bunting and flags.
