Late 15th or early 16th century Grade II Listed inn built on site of earlier medieval inn of which stone cellars survive. Of significant historical importance The White Horse has been Romsey's principal inn since the medieval period, and may have been a guest house for the Abbey, founded in the 9th century. Some timbers are thought to date from 1450 and written records date the inn back to the 1500s. By 1920 the inn was part of Trust Houses Ltd. and in the 1970s part of Trust House Forte. In the hands of Macdonald Hotels at the turn of the 21st century it is now (2019) part of Silks Hotels. Directory entries include; 1784 Charles Sibley (Poft Chaife) - post-chaise is a fast carriage for passengers and/or post; 1792 John Quinton; 1828 Joseph Phillips (& posting house); 1844 Samual & Robert Cocks (& posting); 1851-1859 Mrs Sarah Cocks (posting) - spelt Cox in 1852; 1865 no victualler given; 1875 Charles Robert Prangnell; 1889-1898 James Bignal (& posting house); 1911 Richard Bowen.
