The Corner House, Sandy Lane South in 1913
Taken by my paternal grandfather, George W Baker, this shows the house with my father, his brother and the family dog sitting on the step of the front gate. Previously the family had lived at Image but they didn’t live at The Corner House long, as they moved in about 1919 to Image, seen here 5 years later. This may have been because of Beddington Aerodrome, which would have posed a risk to the family during the First World War. The aerodrome opened in December 1915 and was one of ring of small airfields dotted around London to protect the capital against Zeppelin raids http://www.croydononline.org/history/places/airports.asp My father used to reminisce as to how frightened his brother and he were of aircraft flying over the house, that they used to hide under the stairs.
