Pond at Poynton
Now simply a fishing pond, the original purpose of this pond is much more interesting. It was the ice pond for Poynton Towers. During freezing weather, ice would be collected from the surface of the pond and stored in the adjacent ice house http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1778710 for use as and when required.

Ice House
Built around 1758 for Poynton Towers, a house which has long since disappeared. The listing indicates that this was quite a complex ice house with a later antechamber apparently used for food preparation before storage in the ice house - an early form of deep freeze in addition to the normal purpose for the storage of ice. Listed Grade II.

Former Tower Pit
The outline of the taller part of the building is the clue to the fact that this was the winding engine house of Tower Pit. Opened in 1846, it was a failure due to dangerous geological conditions and had been closed by 1848!

Former Tower Pit
The taller part of the building is the former winding engine house of the failed Tower Pit of 1846 http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1778705 . It now forms just small part of a much larger modern house. The pond is the former ice pond http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1778717 of the now demolished Poynton Towers mansion.
