Special express leaving Chesterfield Midland northbound
View southward, towards Chesterfield (Midland) station; London St Pancras etc. - Sheffield etc. main line. Back in 1957 it was very unusual to find an LNER B1 4-6-0 on this line at all, but this one (No. 61239) was from Carlisle Canal Depot of all places; destination not known.

Northbound Express
47458 departs Chesterfield towards Sheffield - the famous twisted spire is visible on the right. This is almost certainly a cross-country service to Newcastle. The early morning sun lights the cab highlighting the driver and secondman. There is a third person standing in the cab, possibly an inspector or a member of railway staff hitching a lift.

Steel for Sheffield
45001 brings a short train of steel strip along the freight lines at Chesterfield. The train may well have originated from Severn Tunnel Junction and the strip mill at Llanwern. The class 45's were equally at home on express passenger services and heavy freights. On the right is the city of Chesterfield with its famous twisted spire. On the left, it has clearly been a good year for the willowherb.

Chesterfield: Up freight Class H approaching, 1955
View northward from the footbridge north of Chesterfield Midland station, on the immensely busy four-track main line from Sheffield, Rotherham etc., south of Tapton Junction where the original York & North Midland Railway joined the later line through Sheffield, to proceed south of Chesterfield through Clay Cross to Derby, Birmingham etc. on the one hand and to south towards London (and Nottingham) by the Erewash Valley. This is a typical freight of the time, headed by a Stanier 8F 2-8-0, No. 48153, which was built in 1942 and happened to be one of the last surviving BR steam locomotives - withdrawn in 3/68.
