Old mine workings
I'm guessing that these workings involved the extraction of coal as it does outcrop near the surface here. Other possibilities could be iron or possibly even refractory clay.

Horse stone
The Mortimer Road turnpike that only lasted for about 50 years from 1771 ran from Grindleford to Penistone. It went through some hilly countryside and at two very steep hills, extra horse were needed to help the carriages and carts uphill. The extra horses had to be paid for. On the minor road still called Mortime Road north of what is now the A616, a Take Off stone is set into the wall just above Sheephouse Height plantation. This was the spot where the extra horses, which had been paid for, were taken off, and returned to the stables in Midhopestones. The only other known 'Take Off' stone in Yorkshire is near the Strines Inn, also on the Mortimer Road turnpike.

This shows the position of the 'Take Off' stone just above Sheephouse Height Plantation. It was hidden under a lot of vegetation that had to be cleared to expose the stone.

'Take Off' Stone, Mortimer Road, Sheephouse Heights, near Penistone
The 'Take Off' stone is visible in the hedgerow on the right hand side of the road ... take care if you go to see it as you are not very visible to any traffic coming up the hill and round the bend. For a closer look, see ... Image This stone dates from the 1770's when Mortimer Road was first constructed as a Toll Road. The 'Take Off' relates to additional horses attached to heavily laden carts to help pull them up the steep hills. At this point the extra horses were unhitched and taken back down the hill to await the next load. A second 'Take Off' stone is also situated on Mortimer Road, some 20 miles south, near to the Strines Inn ... see Image Image
