Bamford Mill
Standing proudly on the bank of the River Derwent Bamford Mill was built late in the 18th century. It started life as a cotton mill until closure in 1965, after being put to other industrial uses the mill was converted into today’s apartments.

Bamford Mill - steam turbine condensing plant
This little gem has been scrapped and its room is part of an apartment now.
Behind the photographer is a Greenwood & Batley De Laval impulse turbine driving a dynamo (DC) via a reduction gear. In the left foreground is the exhaust pipe with a copper expansion joint leading to the jet condenser in the centre. In the background is the DC motor driven reciprocating air pump. This was a rare example of the breed and its loss is a great shame.

Bamford Mill - steam turbine
This little gem has been scrapped and its room is part of an apartment now.
The round casing in the foreground is a Greenwood & Batley De Laval impulse turbine. This is obscuring a high ratio reduction gear (the De Laval is very fast) and in the background is the driven dynamo (DC of course). The large pipe at the bottom of the frame is the exhaust pipe to the condensing plant with a jet condenser and DC motor driven reciprocating air pump. This was a rare example of the breed and its loss is a great shame.

Bamford Mill - water turbines
This former cotton spinning mill was by now owned by Messrs Carbolite, manufacturers of electric furnaces. It has since been converted to accommodation and this room is now part of an apartment. The machinery has all been scrapped. This shows a pair of water turbines by Gilbert Gilkes and Company of Kendal. These were of 20 and 42 horsepower and drove by ropes. The larger one is in the background.

Bamford Mill and Weir
A partially obscured view of the former Bamford Cotton Mill which employed 230 workers at the height of its production in the 1860s. This picture is taken from the opposite side of the river which was diverted slightly when operations began. The weir which is also visible here behind the wooden footbridge, was constructed using stone from nearby Bamford Edge.
