Haywards Heath Relief Road (Under Construction)
The relief road was initially green lighted back in 1998 and was to be built in a number of phases tied into a number of housing developments. The section from Isaac's Lane, the A273, that included the Bolnore development has been built, however, the section along Rocky Lane along with the new railway railway bridge has yet to be started, whilst this section between the B2112 and Lewes Road has only just been started. The projected completion date is 2015. The houses in the distance are part of Image while this whole area was once part of Anscombe Wood which has been grubbed to make way.

Haywards Heath Relief Road (Under Construction)
First given the go ahead back in 1998 the final completed route is not due to open until 2015. Built to relieve the terrible congestion in the centre of the town during rush hour by diverting the A272 away from the centre. Its long gestation is due to it being built in stages in tandem with other housing developments as well as by two different developers. Part of the road has been built in conjunction with the Bolnore village development on the western side of town but currently stops just north of Rocky Lane. From there the road will swing east, cross the London-Brighton railway by way of a new bridge then follow the course of Rocky Lane to a big roundabout (See Image) at the junction of the B2112. The view here is of the route the road will take when it leaves the roundabout heading eastwards to join the current A272 at this point Image This part of the relief road is bound up with another housing development in and around the former St Francis Hospital. Straight ahead is the remnant of Image much of which has been grubbed to make way for the road. This area of Haywards was until 1934 part of the parish of Wivelsfield.

St Francis Park
New housing estate being built as part of the Haywards Heath relief road scheme. It lies between the western edge of Southdowns Park, the former St Francis Hospital and the remains of Anscombe Wood in the distance to the left much of which has been grubbed to make way for the estate. A small field called Nine Acres, according to Wivelsfield's 1843 tithe map once stood to the immediate right. The area was part of Wivelsfield parish until 1934 when it was transferred to Haywards Heath

Anscombe Wood
A woodbank in the foreground marks the former boundary between the wood and some cottages that were marked on late 19th century maps but had disappeared by 1910. A fair portion of the wood has been grubbed to make way for the new Haywards Heath relief road.

New Roundabout, Haywards Heath Relief Road (1)
Replacing the former junction with the B2112 and two minor routes, Rocky Lane and Colwell Road. The rerouted A272 will cross the roundabout east-west, see Image A small open area that previously existed in front of the house on the left was once the location of a toll booth for users of the former turnpike. This area of Haywards Heath was until 1934 part of the parish of Wivelsfield.

The new part of the roundabout as viewed in Image has now been surfaced and is being used allowing the old part of the B2112 to be torn up in readiness for work on this side. The house to the right is Briar Lea whilst part of the new junction from Rocky Lane has been built on the site of the former Rookery Lane tollbooth.
