Burghley Park, STAMFORD, PE9 3JY

Burghley House was built for Sir William Cecil, later 1st Baron Burghley, who was Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I, between 1558 and 1587 and modelled on the privy lodgings of Richmond Palace. It was subsequently the residence of his descendants, the earls and, since 1801, marquesses of Exeter. Since 1961 it has been owned by a charitable trust established by the family. The house is one of the main examples of stonemasonry and proportion in sixteenth-century English Elizabethan architecture, reflecting the prominence of its founder and the lucrative wool trade of the Cecil estates. It has a suite of rooms remodelled in the baroque style, with carvings by Grinling Gibbons. The main part of the house has 35 major rooms on the ground and first floors. This view of Burghley House was taken through the rungs of the gate which provides access to the area in front of the house. Unlike many houses Burghley doesn't have an ornate external entrance, i.e. the entry door is on the ground floor and an internal staircase provides access to the state rooms on the 1st floor. The north front of the house. The house was being used for the filming of an episode of the TV series 'The Crown'. Burghley House is a large country house situated one mile south of Stamford, Lincolnshire. Built in the 16th century, the exterior largely retains its Elizabethan appearance. Most of the interiors have been remodelled, mostly before 1800. The park was laid out by Capability Brown. The house is open to the public on a seasonal basis. Burghley House viewed from the north, unfortunately it is against the sun. The house was built in the late 16th century for Sir William Cecil and is one of England's finest Elizabethan houses.

The Billiard Room contains a table made in the 1850s from timber recovered from HMS Royal George which sank in 1782. The walls contain a number of paintings particularly of a famous drinking club (The Little Bedlam Club) which used to frequent the house in the 17th century. Members were not identified by name, but by an animal, e.g. stag, wolf etc. The pictures include these animals in the background, hence new members could identify who the other members were. Burghley House used to have a display of painted windows but during WW1 a bomb was dropped near the house which shattered them leaving only this one intact. The original Elizabethan kitchen has survived almost unaltered. The 14 skulls on the wall are those of turtles which used to be kept alive in tanks of water and killed when required for the table. The resulting green turtle soup was then served in the impressive turtle shaped copper tureen below.
