This is now a "bridge over nothing" on a minor urban footpath. Yet it is grade 2 listed (list entry 1031919) as "a rare survival of a toll bridge over a canal". Built 1831, restored 1978 - Neil Clifton's 1977 photo shows it before restoration Image

Oldham Road Rochdale
Before they opened the motorway Image this was the main link road between Rochdale and Oldham.
The photograph was taken the weekend after some of the worst floods to hit Northern England in many years.
The bridge in the picture carries the main Manchester to Leeds railway line known as the Caldervale Line http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caldervale_Line

Rochdale: Oldham Road
Looking north. Before the railway was opened, the road here ran through without a dip, but was lowered to give clearance underneath the railway. This left the shops and houses on this stretch of road on a high-level 'landing'.
