Mill Hill East Station
Not the most attractive London Station, but it was the arrival of the station that started the expansion of this area.
With the Mill Hill Army, Navy, and Air Force sorting office across the road (all military mail passes through Mill Hill!) Sorry no picture.

The end of the line at Mill Hill East
The line between what is now Finsbury Park and Edgware was opened by the Great Northern Railway on the 22nd August 1867. In the London Passenger Transport Board's 'New Works Plan' of 1935 it was proposed that the line be taken over by the Northern line and be diverted into the new Underground station at Edgware which had opened in 1924. The service on the line from East Finchley to Edgware was suspended from 11th September 1939 to allow the work to be completed and the New Works Plan was expected to be completed by spring 1941. In the event the Northern line branch never got past Mill Hill East and so 11th September 1939 was the last day the line was used by passenger trains. Northern line trains first served Mill Hill East on 18th May 1941. The line was closed completely beyond Mill Hill East on 1st June 1964. This view from the platform at Mill Hill East looks beyond the buffers to the closed section, much of which is now a linear parkland walk.

Mill Hill East tube station - the end of the line
Well, it is now, but up to WWII the LNER branch line from Finchley Central continued to Edgware. Plans to make the line double track, and to electrify it for tube trains, were interrupted by the war and subsequently cancelled. The line continued to be used for goods traffic until it was closed in the 1960s; the tracks were then lifted - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mill_Hill_East_tube_station and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgware_tube_station .

Mill Hill East station
The end of the Northern Line branch at Mill Hill East. Originally, the line ran all the way to Edgware, though no London Underground services ran on this branch. There were however plans to extend an Underground service along this route but they were dropped due to lack of funding in the 1940s.

Where Once There Were Tracks
Standing atop the embankment which carried the GNR branch beyond Mill Hill East towards The Hale and Edgware. Through the fence you can see the buffers at the current end of the line and Mill Hill East station.

Mill Hill East station
The single track terminus station at Mill Hill East. This station is on a branch of London Underground's Northern Line. When it was first built, the line continued beyond here to Edgware. It had been planned as a double-track railway, but the second track was never installed.

The end of the railway line at Mill Hill East. The line once continued from here to Edgware, but was closed to passengers in 1939, Freight trains continued to use the line until 1964. Just visible through the trees, housing has since been built across the former railway.
