Tolmers Square, Euston
The modern Tolmers Square, in the triangle created by Euston Road, Hampstead Road and North Gower Street, consists of a ring of council flats incorporating a pub and wine bar. The original plan, in the 1970s, had been to redevelop the site for office accommodation but this was bitterly opposed by residents of the old Tolmers Square. In the end, the demolition went ahead but Camden Council compulsorily purchased the site, scaled back the offices and built the estate pictured here.

Square Tavern, Tolmers Square

Tolmers Square, Euston
The modern Tolmers Square consists of council flats set around a paved open area with trees. Access to the square is through narrow passages on the east and west sides of the square - far from obvious to the casual visitor.

North Gower Street, NW1: Speedy?s caf? and Mazzini blue plaque
Guiseppe Mazzini, nineteenth-century campaigner for Italian unification, lived in exile in this house for a while. Whether he partook of egg and chips next door is not recorded.
