Newport: Sir Charles Morgan statue
Sir Charles Morgan (1760-1846) was a Member of Parliament for Newport in the 19th century. This sculpture was made four years after his death but was only on prominent display, in the High Street, for a decade. It returned to prominence in 1992 when it was put in place here in Bridge Street.

Statue of Sir Charles Morgan
Since 1992, this statue of Sir Charles Morgan (1760-1846) has been situated on Bridge Street, he was a Member of Parliament and wealthy landowner in Newport in the 19th Century. This statue dates from 1850, four years after his death. It was sculpted in bronze by J.E.Thomas and was originally placed in the High Street, but remained there for just ten years before being removed. The question is where was it during the 132 years between these dates?

Grade II listed statue and pedestal, Bridge Street, Newport
Located in the city centre, between a NatWest bank branch and an HSBC bank branch in the pedestrianised part of Bridge Street. The statue depicts Sir Charles Morgan of Tredegar (1760-1846), MP for Brecon (1787-96) and for Monmouthshire (1796-1831) and a well-known agriculturalist in this area. Both pedestal and statue are signed by John Evan Thomas, sculptor, dated 1848. Grade II listed in 1980.

Late 20th century inscription on a 19th century statue pedestal in Newport city centre
Located here. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4749468 The inscription records that the statue was returned to the town centre (as it then was) in May 1992 and a time capsule was buried in the plinth by the 1991-1992 mayor, Councillor Harry Williams.
The relocated statue was unveiled by the 1992-1993 mayor, Councillor Alan Perry.

The bank on the corner of Stow Hill and Bridge Street was formerly a Midland bank branch. Viewed in June 2017. The branch has recently been rebranded from HSBC to HSBC UK. The building was Grade II listed in 2000.
