Royal Standard Place
Somewhere here, Charles I raised his standard at the start of the Civil War. Until 1992, this was the site of Nottingham General Hospital - the rotunda on the left, by Alfred Waterhouse, was its Jubilee Wing, built to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee and completed five years later. Its ground floor is now a pub, The Roundhouse, and on this hot midsummer evening there were plenty of customers round the outdoor tables.

The Rotunda on a wet May morning
Nottingham's General Hospital stood on this site from 1782-1992. The rotunda, the former Jubilee Wing, designed by Alfred Waterhouse, has been a distinctive shape on the city skyline since 1898, when its foundation stone was laid by the Duke of Portland as a memorial of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee - see Alan Murray-Rust's
