Somewhere here, Charles I raised his standard at the start of the Civil War. Until 1992, this was the site of Nottingham General Hospital - the rotunda on the left, by Alfred Waterhouse, was its Jubilee Wing, built to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee and completed five years later. Its ground floor is now a pub, The Roundhouse, and on this hot midsummer evening there were plenty of customers round the outdoor tables.
