Newcastle Interiors : The City Hall
It's interval time at Newcastle City Hall (1928 by Nicholas & Dixon-Spain).
This popular concert venue will soon fill up prior to the arrival onstage of the much-loved band Squeeze.

Newcastle Interiors : Ready? One Two Three Four!
OK, so the picture is not perfect - it's a longish hand-held exposure on a wee pocket camera - but it records a significant event : Squeeze are back together and are rocking Newcastle City Hall. Bliss!

Notice the barrier that blocks vehicles from the junction of Northumberland Road with John Dobson Street, although all road markings have been left. Northumberland Road used to be a major through route from the east but is now blocked by the Central Motorway to the east and a pedestrianised Northumberland Street to the west. There are proposals for a grand public square here, outside the City Hall, but maybe the Council want to keep their options open.

College House, Northumberland Road, Newcastle
By R.J. Johnson, 1882-83, in "Norman Shaw's Queen Anne style". The ogee-roofed front to College Street brings to mind a Jacobean gatehouse (but nothing else does). The block round the corner has a slightly different character but appears to be of the same date. Grade II listed.
This is all Northumbria University territory.
Behind is St James

Northumberland Baths, City Pool and City Hall, Northumberland Road
A panoramic view (perspective-corrected) of the front elevation of The City Pool and City Hall. These were built by C. Nicholas and J.E. Dixon Spain in 1928 in a neo-Georgian design with a colonnaded entrance. The Pool is on the same site of older baths which had been designed by John Dobson
Image in 1839, which proved unsuccessful. The Turkish bath in the current building is very much admired.

City Hall and Baths, Northumberland Road, Newcastle
A remarkably grand composition, resembling the form of a Palladian country house, giving a clue as to the status of such buildings at the time. This was built in 1928 to the designs of Nicholas & Dixon-Spain. Grade II listed.
The building fulfilled its original function until 2013, but has since sadly closed and at the time of writing (2015) is up for sale.

Dame Allan's School, College Street
Dame Allan's School was built in 1883 by R.J. Johnson, a local architect. High up on a gable wall, right-centre, is a niche containing a statue of Dame Eleanor Allan who founded schools in Newcastle in 1705. This building housed the schools until they moved to Fenham in the 1930s and now forms part of Northumbria University.
