Market Place
Seen at the junction with Kitchener Road and Prospect Ring. The sorting office on the left dates to 1901 whilst the modern housing of Ash Tree Court conveniently is 100 hundred years younger, dating to 2001. Ash Tree Court sits on the site of The George public house and stands at what was southern entrance to the original centre of East Finchley - rather than the current High Road. There used to be a large hog market on this site, opened around 1680 by Thomas Odell, from which West End butchers bought their pigs. It was one of the largest specialist markets in the UK.

What Is It?
I'm not sure whether this was intended as a children's play area in the 1960's or as a sculpture in brick. It probably works better as the latter, especially as there is a proper playground around the corner by Park Road. Behind are garages for the residents of Propect Ring.

Kitchener Road, East Finchley
Although many 1960s and 70s tower blocks like the ones here have been demolished over the years, but now as you can see many are being replaced by new ones even though they were meant to be a bad idea.
