Weekend Line and Station Closures
That's the title of the email notifications sent out every Thursday by Transport for London to advise of planned engineering works. October 5th/6th and 12th/13th would see the High Barnet Branch of the Northern Line closed two weekends in a row for track replacement at Finchley Central and East Finchley. An extensive network of rail replacement buses was provided. In this photo Sullivan Bus WVL4 operating a replacement service to Archway from High Barnet turns onto Kingsway from the High Road. Only rail replacement buses make this turn, normal services are routed through the bus station under 100 Kingsway. The Sea Rock on the right is an Indian restaurant and occupies a building that was once a bank.

High Road, North Finchley
SNC173, on the 714 route to Dorking collects passengers from outside Owen Owen's department store. The independent store was undergoing an external refit at the time. This store was originally the new home of Prior's department store, built in the late 1930's and subsequently taken over by Owen Owen's. Owen Owen's themselves finally succumbed to market forces and closed in 1993. The original main building behind the bus became home to an Argos store and an arcade of small shops appeared in part of the main building and the adjacent building, also part of Owen Owen's, on the right. Although clearly popular, the 714 services ceased in 1977.

North Finchley Bus Station
Seen from the top deck of a number 125. The new bus station has had a chequered history, being closed for some time due to safety issues with pedestrians walking in via the road entrances. It is located on the site of the old Gaumont Cinema as part of the Arts Depot development. Above are apartments. The Arts Depot itself is to the right. Through the doors to the left is the A1003 Woodhouse Road.
