Three venues on Swan Street
In the middle is the Burton Arms. In the mid-1800s it was known as the John O'Groats House. It was a Theakston's house in 1993 and before that a Bass house. Now it is a free house. http://pubs-of-manchester.blogspot.co.uk/2010/05/66-burton-arms-swan-st.html (Pubs of Manchester). Pub website: http://burtonarms.co.uk/ Image On the right is the Smithfield Market Tavern. Its history dates back to 1823 when it fronted Coop Street. The Swan Street side was then a grocer's which was then incorporated to create one long, thin vault. It brewed its own beer on site and was known as the Smithfield Vaults. http://pubs-of-manchester.blogspot.co.uk/2010/04/58-smithfield-swan-st.html (Pubs of Manchester). In recent years it has expanded into the premises which previous separated it from the Burton Arms and is currently a Blackjack Brewery taphouse Image On the left is half of the "Band on the Wall". The night club was opened in the former George and Dragon on the corner of Swan Street and Oak Street in the 1930s and has since expanded next door into what was a Spirits Warehouse in 1888. The Burton Arms
The Burton Arms pub has entrances on both Swan Street and Foundry Lane (this view is from Foundry Lane). During the nineteenth century, it was bustling with workers from the former Smithfield Market although at that time the pub was known as "The John O'Groats House Public House".
