Sighting tower south of Bramhope
This is a sighting tower, built so that the engineers could keep a true line during construction of the Bramhope Tunnel on the Leeds to Harrogate railway line, directly underneath this point. This field was also used as a navvie camp during construction. See http://www.bramhope.org/brtunnel.htm

Bramhope sighting tower
This view shows the surveying slits lined up, meaning that the camera location must be above the centreline of the tunnel. One of two such structures built in 1845 to aid the setting out of the twenty constructions shafts along the line of the tunnel, this is the only one that remains and is listed grade II (list entry 1253379). See Image for a side view from the road.

The sighting tower at Bramhope
This brick chimney-like structure sits above a railway tunnel on the Leeds-Harrogate line. As explained by other contributors Image it was erected c.1845 as an aid to surveyors setting out the line of the tunnel, rather than as a ventilation shaft. It is now grade 2 listed (list entry 1253379).
