The sighting tower at Bramhope

This brick chimney-like structure sits above a railway tunnel on the Leeds-Harrogate line. As explained by other contributors Image it was erected c.1845 as an aid to surveyors setting out the line of the tunnel, rather than as a ventilation shaft. It is now grade 2 listed (list entry 1253379).
