East Alley, path to The Gatherums
This is one of three narrow, steep walkways that lead down to "The Gatherums", which is a park aligned with a path from Church St. to Aswell St. See: Image; Image Unlike the other two, the name is self explanatory!

Kitcat, way to The Gatherums
This is one of three narrow, steep walkways that lead down to "The Gatherums", which is a park aligned with a path from Church St. to Aswell St. I understand it was named quite recently in memory of Kit Cat Lane, which ran past the end of it. I suspect the name has the same origins as "Kidgate". Names were given to each of the three alleyways leading into the Gatherums in order to indicate to people that they were public thoroughfares and not private entrances. See also: Image; Image

The Gatherums
This is a strange little area in the town centre, a strip of green running alongside a path that connects two streets. It is usually quite dark, because it is sandwiched between two rows of houses, and was quite a scruffy, sinister place until the Council decided to give it a makeover a few years ago. Of course it wanted to pull all the trees down, but some were saved after a public outcry. The end result is pretty tame but more usable. There used to be a row of slum dwellings along it with the Aswell Spring running through an open ditch in front of them. The spring now runs underground and can be heard near Aswell St., where there is an inspection cover. However the Gatherums is let down by the Aswell Street end, which is a bit derelict.

Paradise Smoot
This is one of three narrow, steep walkways that lead down to "The Gatherums", which is a park aligned with a path from Church St. to Aswell St. The name comes from the Danish word 'smutte', which means a narrow passage between two houses. This area was under Danish control in the 9th century, though the walkway only received the name in 2009. 'Paradise' was the name of an old orchard upon which Kidgate School (opposite) was built. For more smoots, though not bearing this name, see Image; Image

Kidgate School
A good, old-fashioned and well-loved school. The inscription says "Altered 1929". Kidgate is a charming street where little has changed over the decades, but negotiating the speed bumps (one can be seen bottom right) prevents you from taking in the view!

Queen St. car park
A much valued carpark close to the market, and surrounded by the old properties of the Louth Conservation Area. This is the pedestrian entrance from the Gatherums, an unusual little park area alongside a footpath. The only new things here are he cars, the barriers and the brick pillar. The sign on it is one of a series of such signs commissioned by the Town Council a few years back. It was a controversial contract in that it cost the tax-payers £20,000 and went to someone who did not live locally. The quotes are replies to questions he asked of local people.
