War Department Boundary Marker set in southwest facing boundary wall facing the end of the terrace of houses in Havelock Street, Lancaster. Formerly inscribed W ↑ D / No 28 but has been effaced. Mystery "Bench Mark"
What looks like an OS cut bench mark, but rotated 90 degrees, on one of the old buildings of the former Bowerham Barracks (now University of Cumbria). No bench mark appears on OS maps at this location. It is possible the stone has been moved and re-used, but there is no evidence of this. A mystery.

Old Boundary Marker opposite Adelphi Street, Lancaster
War Department Boundary Marker set in the extrenal wall of a bastion facing southwest down the back terrace lane between Adelphi Street and Golgotha Road. Formerly inscribed W ↑ D / No 27 but has been effaced. It marked the boundary of the former Bowerham Barracks (King’s Own Royal Regiment, c.1873 to 1959), now a campus of the University of Cumbria.

Boundary Stone
War Department boundary stone, marking the edge of the former Bowerham Barracks (Kings Own Royal Regiment, c. 1873 - 1959), now a campus of the University of Cumbria. There were 31 of these stones; they are marked and numbered on old 25" OS maps. Most are still extant, and most have had the lettering chiselled off, as here, when the War Dept vacated the site. This one (No.27) is on a bastion of the boundary wall. Contact me for more details.
