Time for refreshment at the Rubbing House, Epsom Downs
They have kindly provided a trough of water for your horse while you eat and drink in the sun. But on this lovely Spring day everyone seems to have left their horse at home and come by car. No-one is thinking of the famous Derby winner Cicero http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicero_(horse) when there is excellent food to be had.

The Rubbing House
One of three pubs overlooking the racecourse, the Rubbing House (www.rubbinghouse.com ) was built around 1866 and commands a superb view of the finishing straight and The Hill. Seen here from the other side of the finishing straight, there is a narrow bridle crossing (opposite the brick cabinet to right of photo) which is closed during racing.

The Rubbing House from Chalk Lane
Chalk Lane is a minor road leading up to Epsom Downs from the Woodcote part of town. A key route onto the downs for walkers, cyclists and ridden horses, it's been subject to a traffic regulation order since 1922!

A Balcony with a marvellous view at Epsom Racecourse
The Rubbing House has this interesting balcony, with iron railings, which looks directly up the straight towards Tattenham Corner and provides a clear view of virtually all the Derby Course apart from the start.
The public house is Victorian, but I forgot to look closely to see if the balcony and railings are of the same age.

Waiting for the Customers to arrive at Epsom Race Course
The Rubbing House is a public house actually on the Race Course at Epsom, and undoubtedly gets overcrowded on race days. It is clearly popular at other times, as while there was plenty of empty tables when we arrived shortly after noon on a Friday in March every table was occupied by the time we had finished our meal.

Epsom Racecourse: The 'Rubbing House'
This public house is open every day, whether or not racing is taking place. I have not tried the food, but have been told it is very good. Certainly a nice place to sit outside on a summer's day.

The Rubbing House and the Holiday Inn Express
The Rubbing House is one of three pubs to overlook the downs, although it is now mainly a large restaurant. To the left is Racecourse Cottage, and occupying the left side is the Holiday Inn Express at Epsom Downs, opened in late 2008.
A horse rider is visible just below the Rubbing House, exiting the hack area out onto Walton Road.
