Toll House
This house is instantly recognisable as a toll house, because it had windows at 45º to the main elevations, so that the tollkeeper could see any traffic approaching from either direction.

Waterproofing the Ground
These workmen are laying sheets of fleece-like material on top of stone drains. The sheets are not quite waterproof, and will allow water to seep through, but they will prevent the stone drain becoming clogged with soil. The soil will be laid on polythene on top of the fleece.

Outskirts of Elgin
This is as far as the town has expanded so far. I wonder how long it will be before this field too is built on?

Old Linkwood Burn
The tree stumps and the gap between the scruffy remains of more trees are all that remain of the trees that lined the Linkwood Burn when it flowed straight down into the River Lossie here. The burn has been diverted to the right to join the River Lossie several hundred metres further east. Compare with Image], taken from almost the same spot.

Flood Alleviation
The excavations here are part of a multi-million pound scheme to prevent, or at least mitigate the effects of, flooding in Elgin. The meandering River Lossie is at the foot of the steep bank in the background, and in the foreground there is the head of a drainage ditch which will channel water seeping out of the ground at Chanonry Industrial Estate into the Linkwood Burn and eventually into the River Lossie.
