Nairn station looking west
When this photograph was taken the signalman or signalwoman used a bike to ride between the two signalboxes; one can be seen in the distance. The practice came to an end in April 2000.

ScotRail HST at Nairn Railway Station
A ScotRail High Speed Train (HST) stands at Nairn station awaiting a service from Inverness to clear the single line ahead to Inverness. The Inter7City trains were introduced to provide a more suitable long distance train than the Turbostar DMUs that are on the route. Eventually these trains will be fully refurbished to have power doors and a buffet car.

Nairn station from the east
The 1:50000 map has the station right on the boundary; the 1:25000 shoves it more in this square. I'm going with the 1:25000.

Trains passing at Nairn
The convention on British railways has always been that trains pass on the left. With the implementation of bi-directional signalling following the move away from mechanical signalling, this is not now always the case. In this view, for reasons unknown to me, the trains at Nairn station are passing on the right, that nearest the camera heading for Inverness and the approaching train for Aberdeen. No doubt there are good reasons for abandoning the old convention but it can cause confusion for ageing traditionalists such as me!
