Ex airfield and edge of housing estate
It is clear why this very flat field was chosen for the pre-war Westley airfield. In the distance we see the backs of the houses in Oliver Road, built on the eastern part of the airfield site.

Westley airfield site from footpath
When Westley airfield was created in the late 1930s this footpath had to be repositioned off the field. The path now seems to have split into two parallel versions, either side of this strip of planted trees. The airfield stretched over the first horizon down to the railway bridge visible to the left, where the Newmarket Road (formerly the A45) passes over the railway at a very acute angle. Most of the airfield is now built on, while other parts have reverted to agriculture.

Railway bridge on western edge of Bury St. Edmunds
A dual carriageway slip road links Newmarket Road, Bury St. Edmunds to a large roundabout giving access to Westley and Fornham villages and the A14. It passes over this very oblique railway bridge. In the photo a truck is heading westwards over the bridge. In the foreground we see a corner of a newly introduced Saturday car boot sale. This point marks roughly the western limit of the former Westley Airfield, which was used pre-war and during WW2, but largely turned into a housing estate in the 1950s.
