Footpath between Butts Meadow & Berkhamsted School playing field
The large building visible over the hedge is an extension that is under construction to the preparatory building of Berkhamsted School. Before it became a collegiate school, this was known as Berkhamsted School for Girls.

Very little seems to have changed over 40 years see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1765860 other than the former hedge, which had been removed when the new owner moved here, so a new one was planted about 24 years ago.

Marks Gate, Ashlyns Road, Berkhamsted in 1970
This was the home of my paternal grandfather from 1929-1960. Looking at family photographs of 1929, the house appears new, as it was built in 1919. I assume he named it after Marks Gate in Essex from where his mother came from, see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1655097 (her maiden name was Drake). Previously, he lived at Ronhead see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2111152 in Montague Road, Berkhamsted. He and his wife are buried in St Peter's Church cemetery see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1763946

Image is the house (on the far right of the frame). Perhaps the weeds, growing on the pavement, were due to the street cleaner having been called up to support the war effort. Taken by my grandfather George W Baker.

Marks Gate?s garage c1940
This view was taken by my paternal grandfather George W Baker and also shows his car bearing the number plate EMY 85. The car's windscreen had a couple of top hinges so it could be opened a little to allow an additional airflow. The garage was in Image as this side view shows,
