This was the home of my paternal grandfather from 1929-1960. Looking at family photographs of 1929, the house appears new, as it was built in 1919. I assume he named it after Marks Gate in Essex from where his mother came from, see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1655097 (her maiden name was Drake). Previously, he lived at Ronhead see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2111152 in Montague Road, Berkhamsted.
