Painesend, near Tring
A narrow country lane through Painesend near Tring. The buildings are part of Painesend Farm. In the opposite direction the lane continues to Hanghill where it comes to an abrupt dead end, though a track continues and various footpaths strike off to left and right. Alternative spellings for this place are Paine's End and Painsend

Painsend Farm
This farm is near the end of a dead-end lane with lovely views across wooded countryside towards Tring. On the map this farm is shown as Painsend, alternative spellings are Paine's End and Painesend. [Edit Jan 2012] I am reliably informed that this fine old building has been demolished and replaced with something "grander" - pity. See Image]

The new Painsend Farm
I took a photograph of the original Painsend Farm back in 2005 which you can see here Image Since then, that old house has been demolished and the one seen here has replaced it.

Beech leaves preparing for the winter
Autumn is coming – and these beech leaves are starting to turn brown – some before the rest, and a few were already on the ground.

Only 67 days to Christmas Pud
Not a lot of holly on this woodland track. Will these berries survive for the birds – or will they end up as a decoration on a Xmas Pudding.

Pavis Wood looking northwestwards
A little clearing in the beech trees of Pavis Wood allows a glimpse through to more distant hills and fields. The land falls rapidly away in this direction then rises again to form Coombe Hill and the wooded slopes of Wendover Woods.

Trees and leaves in Pavis Wood
The fallen leaves, mostly beech with a few oak, form a crispy brown carpet on the ground of Pavis Wood. The bare trees form a tangle of branches while lower down evergreen shrubs such as holly add a splash of green.

Reservoirs by Bottom Lane
A large area well screened from the lane, with older parts of the Thames Water installation ahead and out of sight to the left, and a newer or refurbished part on the right. According to a sign on the gate, the newer part may be the Dancers End WTW AMP5 Project.

Footpaths cross at the corner of Pavis Wood
It is sometimes difficult to say where one wood ends and the next one begins, but if one takes the parish boundary as a guide the wood to the right of the photographer is Pavis Wood and the one to the left is Northhill Wood. Straight ahead the footpath continues towards Spencer's Green Farm. These are crossed by a bridleway which runs along the north edge of the woods at the bottom of the Chiltern scarp slope.
