Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire Railway Trackbed
This rough terrain is the route (on an embankment) of the old Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire Railway, which linked Maryhill Central to Springburn Park goods station (Located adjacent to Farmfoods close to Balgrayhill Rd)). No formal path exists, but it is possible to follow the route all the way to Stobhill Hospital.

Glasgow, Eastfield: westbound freight on Balornock Junction - Maryhill line, 1961
View eastward on the ex-Caledonian Railway, Lanarkshire & Dumbartonshire section (subsequently closed), on the viaduct crossing the ex-NBR main line from Glasgow Queen Street and the exit from Eastfield Locomotive Depot. The westbound Class J freight is hauled by ex-CR McIntosh '812' class 3F 0-6-0 No. 57592 (built 1900, withdrawn 8/63).

Eastfield TMD
Locomotives stand between duties on Eastfield Traction Maintenance Depot. The shunters, like 08621 in the centre of the photo, have returned for refuelling over the weekend. 24006 in the foreground was withdrawn and being stripped for spares to keep other members of the class running. She's a long way from where she first earned her keep - allocated to Derby when new in January 1959 and transferred to Hither Green in south-east London on the 30th of January that year.
Eastfield Depot opened in 1904 but with the end of locomotive hauled passenger working and reducing freight flows in the 1980's the depot finally closed in 1992 and was demolished. A new depot was built on the same site to service the modern diesel units operating the passenger services. It opened in 2004.

A North British 'Glen' 4-4-0 at Eastfield Locomotive Depot
View westward over the north end of the Depot, featuring ex-NB D34 'Glen' 4-4-0 No. 62477 'Glen Dochart' in the yard. Eastfield was the principal Locomotive Depot of the LNER (ex-NBR) in Glasgow, which in 1954 was coded 65A and had an allocation of 141, comprising: 20 4-6-0 (3 LMS, 17 LNE), 19 4-4-0, 25 2-6-0 (6 LMS, 18 LNE), 21 0-6-0, 6 4-4-2T, 7 2-6-2T, 2 0-8-0T, 18 0-6-2T, 21 0-6-0T, 2 0-4-0T, constituting a remarkable variety of types and classes. The 'Glen' would have been used mainly on West Highland Line passenger trains.

Eastfield Crossing
The train seen heading north (towards camera) has just left Glasgow Queen Street Station and is heading for Edinburgh. It is just possible to discern a high embankment beside the third coach of this six-car train. This was the former Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire Railway route between Maryhill to Springburn Park (Robroyston), and crossed over the Queen Street main line by a double-arched bridge at what was once Eastfield MPD (Motive Power Depot). The section here - to Possil Junction and Possil Station was a goods only line, as Possil Station was the terminus for passenger services arriving from Maryhill and Glasgow. When the line closed the bridge was eventually demolished, with only the brick supports visible either side of the main line. However recent developments at Eastfield sidings to improve vehicular access resulted in these remnants being removed and the raised embankment to the east (left of picture) being cut back further. The tree on the left shows the end of the embankment.
Originally Eastfield MPD was opened for business by the North British Railway in 1904 (this became LNER after the 1921 reorganisation). The depot was eventually closed for good in 1992 and the site cleared. Scotrail subsequently decided to use the site for the construction of new maintenance sheds and a train-wash facility, and was finally reopened in 2004 complete with a simplified track layout.

Class 20 at Eastfield TMD
Sitting outside one of the maintenance sheds on Eastfield depot is 20117. She is equipped with mini-snow ploughs. The recess in the cab-side was provided for automated table catching apparatus - to collect the tablet giving permission to work along a single line section of track. The apparatus is not fitted though. To her left are a pair of class 27 locomotives. The footsteps on the right appear to have seen better days!

Scrap Loco and Disused Railway Embankment
Loco 24006 was used for re-railing exercises from 1975 to 1980 at Eastfield depot. The embankment and bridge abutment of a former railway can also be seen. Note the prefabs!
