Abbey Craig
Crags on the hill that carries Stirling's favourite eyesore - the statue of Wallace. (The monument is a bit of a blot on the landscape too mind). The loose rock of these crags is prone to fall on the road below, which is protected by netting, barriers and a ban on climbing.

The Abbey Craig from Stirling Castle
A view from the esplanade of Stirling Castle looking eastwards towards the Abbey Craig where the Wallace Monument, built in 1861, marks the spot where William Wallace and Andrew Moray are said to have lain in wait before the battle of Stirling Bridge against an English army in 1297. The wooden bridge which featured in the battle stood just upstream from the mediaeval stone bridge (c.1500) visible in the lower left-hand corner of the photograph. In 1746, one of the arches of the stone bridge was deliberately blown up to prevent the Jacobite army crossing the river to reach the town and the castle.

The Abbey Craig from Stirling Castle
A view from the esplanade of Stirling Castle showing the Old Stirling Bridge over the River Forth and the Wallace Monument against the splendid backdrop of the Ochil Hills. "As this little, but very pleasant spot, was on the north side of the castle, we had from thence a most agreeable prospect indeed over the valley and the river; as it is truly beautiful, so it is what the people of Sterling justly boast of, and, indeed, seldom forget it, I mean the meanders, or reaches of the River Forth. They are so spacious, and return so near themselves, with so regular and exactly a sweep, that, I think, the like is not to be seen in Britain, if it is in Europe, especially where the river is so large also. (...) The form of this winding may be conceived of a little by the length of the way, for it is near twenty miles from Sterling to Alloway [Alloa] by water, and hardly four miles by land."-- Daniel Defoe, A Tour Thro' The Whole Island of Great Britain, 1724-6

Ladysneuk Road Level Crossing
A coal train heading for Longannet. The level crossing has recently been rebuilt as part of the reopening of the railway, but will wreck your car if not crossed with care - there are issues with the quality of construction.
