A branch has fallen from one of them, and a subsequent study has revealed that most were subject to weak "branch union".

Exeter War Memorial
This is the Devon War Memorial, opposite the cathedral. It was unveiled in May 1921 by the Prince of Wales and is fashioned from a single piece of granite (extracted especially from Haytor quarry) and designed by the famous architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. It is not to be confused with The Northernhay War Memorial, which is in Rougemont castle. He described it thus "... it is very simple and a monolith and its subtlety in lines means labour, care and thought. It is out of one stone, the biggest I could get.... it should endure for ever". See http://www.exetermemories.co.uk/em/_art/devonwarmemorial.php for a detailed account of the memorial.

On a line
The Devon War Memorial is aligned deliberately with the altar of Exeter Cathedral through the centre of the West Front. The steps around the memorial are known as the Jellicoe Steps, and the railings were added in 2001 due to the concerns over vandalism. However, in 2008, the Dean and Chapter proposed to refurbish Cathedral Yard - and proposed to remove the memorial and the Steps. Local opposition was so great that the idea was quickly dropped.
