The Devon War Memorial is aligned deliberately with the altar of Exeter Cathedral through the centre of the West Front. The steps around the memorial are known as the Jellicoe Steps, and the railings were added in 2001 due to the concerns over vandalism. However, in 2008, the Dean and Chapter proposed to refurbish Cathedral Yard - and proposed to remove the memorial and the Steps. Local opposition was so great that the idea was quickly dropped.
