A mural monument at Pencaitland Parish Churchyard
This symbolic grave monument is on the south wall of the church. Two winged souls, emblems of immortality, are at the top edges, while a trumpet-playing cherub, flanked by two skulls, is at the top centre. Other symbols of mortality are bones and hourglasses. At the foot of the monument is a symbolic scene from the bible, the Sower and the Reaper with the Reaper signifying death.
Although some parts are illegible, the inscription reads:
HERE LYES DAVID PRINGLE FARMER IN
TEMPLEHALL WHO DIED OCTOBER 18 1735
AGED 65 YEARS. LILLIE PRINGLE HIS
SPOUSE DIED FEBR 15 1742 AGED 55
YEARS. ROBERT PRINGLE THEIR SON

A symbolic wall monument at Pencaitland Parish Church
This 18th century mural monument is built into the west wall of the church. The winged soul at the top is a symbol of immortality representing the soul of the deceased’s journey towards Heaven, but the star attraction is the menacing winged skull below which is a symbol of mortality.

A symbolic gravestone at Pencaitland Parish Churchyard
This will be the grave of a woodcutter as the figure is taking an axe to a tree. He is standing on a winged soul which is a symbol of immortality representing the soul of the deceased’s journey towards Heaven. The stone has sunk into the ground over the years and only the top of a skull, a symbol of mortality, is showing at the bottom.

A collier?s gravestone at Pencaitland Parish Churchyard
This symbolic stone dated 1752 marks the grave of a collier. The tools shown are a pickaxe, wedges, a straight tined pickaxe, and a large hammer. A straight tined pickaxe was used for working in confined areas such as narrow coal seams. The skull and hourglass are emblems of mortality.
