The Sun Inn, Lothian Bridge
A mid-19th century (it appears on the 1854 1st edition OS map) roadside public house, still providing overnight accommodation. Category C Listed.

Newbattle Viaduct - 2
The tallest pier, sited in the bed of the River South Esk. This shows clearly the additional buttressing, which also serves as cutwater. If the river level should ever rise as high as the top of the cutwater, there would be an unimaginably catastrophic flood. Note how the river has cut itself into the solid sandstone bedding to form quite a narrow channel during the normal water flow seen here.

Sun Inn and Newbattle Viaduct, Lothianbridge
The viaduct dominates the scene here, crossing the valley of the South Esk. It was opened in 1849, built as a railway link for the coal pits at Arniston, Easthouses, Bryans and Lingerwood, on land owned by the Dundas and Lothian families. Although the Waverley line closed in the late 1960s, trains will be crossing the viaduct again when the Borders Railway opens in September.

River South Esk at Newbattle Viaduct
The piers of the 23-arch railway viaduct span the river and cross the valley taking the line to Newtongrange. Note the sandstone at the riverbank. The viaduct dates from the 1840s and has recently been refurbished for the Edinburgh-Tweedbank Borders Railway.

Newbattle Viaduct
A fine grade B listed viaduct comprising 23 arches in total built in 1847. The viaduct originally carried the "Waverley" line from Edinburgh to Carlisle. It is presently being used to transport material for the construction of the "Border Railway" to Tweedbank and will eventually be used as part of that line.
