The tallest pier, sited in the bed of the River South Esk. This shows clearly the additional buttressing, which also serves as cutwater. If the river level should ever rise as high as the top of the cutwater, there would be an unimaginably catastrophic flood. Note how the river has cut itself into the solid sandstone bedding to form quite a narrow channel during the normal water flow seen here.
