Sun Inn and Newbattle Viaduct, Lothianbridge

The viaduct dominates the scene here, crossing the valley of the South Esk. It was opened in 1849, built as a railway link for the coal pits at Arniston, Easthouses, Bryans and Lingerwood, on land owned by the Dundas and Lothian families. Although the Waverley line closed in the late 1960s, trains will be crossing the viaduct again when the Borders Railway opens in September.
