Craiglockhart Dell east grotto
One of two rustic grottos built c.1756 on the former grounds of Craiglockhart House.

West Grotto
This is one of two grottos built for Dr Alexander Munro of Craiglockhart in about 1830, when such buildings were very fashionable. They were intended to provide shelter for ladies strolling in the gardens. The interriors are decorated with sea shells.

Rustic Fence
The fence here protects walkers from a steep slope down to the river, though it would not stop a determined walker from courting disaster. Especially not the gap in the middle.

Redhall Doocot
The doocot is of an unusual hexagonal plan, and contained 757 nestboxes. A small plaque on the post near the door says that it was built in 1756 by John Christy for Inglis of Redhall. On the back is a panel with the arms of Sir Adam Otterburn, who died in 1548.

They were intended to provide shelter for ladies strolling in the gardens. I wonder what their occupants would make of the many female runners and cyclist who rush past it in the 21st century?

East Grotto
This is one of two grottos built for Dr Alexander Munro of Craiglockhart in about 1830, when such buildings were very fashionable. They were intended to provide shelter for ladies strolling in the gardens. This is the rear of the building, showing the window which offers a view up the insignificant but romantic (in the literary sense) Oriel Cottage Burn, which marks the boundary between the estates of Redhall and Craiglockhart.

Oriel Cottage Burn
Ladies resting in the Image] could enjoy this view up the Oriel Cottage Burn, though it would have been slightly restricted by the now vanished tracery of the trefoil at the top.

Carious Weathering of Sandstone
At the top of the arch of Image] the sandstone has been weathered into a honeycomb texture. This is characteristic of sandstones with calcareous cement, which dissolves in acid rain.
