The Greenway near Manor Road
By the 1850s the River Thames in central London was a vast open sewer and “The Great Stink” of 1855 brought matters to a head. The smell was so strong that curtains soaked in calcium chloride had to be hung over the windows of the Houses of Parliament facing the river. The Government finally acknowledged the problem and established the Metropolitan Board of Works. Their first task was the provision of a proper sewerage and drainage system. The Northern and Southern Outfall Sewers were constructed between 1860 and 1865, the former carrying sewage from northern London to the Northern Outfall Works at Beckton. The Greenway has been opened up on top as a footway and cycle track and runs all the way from Victoria Park to Beckton. The Capital Ring follows most of it.

The Greenway, West Ham
A permissive path built on top of an embankment which contains the Northern Outfall Sewer. There is an access from Manor Road close to here. There are fences each side which are intended to control access, but there are various paths up and down the side of the embankments from the nearby residential areas which suggest that local children get in without having to go the long way round.

West Ham station
West Ham is a complicated station. On the high level, shown here, are the District Line tracks, with a Wimbledon train ready to depart, and the ex-London, Tilbury and Southend platforms, from which this photograph was taken. Down below, but still above ground here, are the Jubilee Line tracks, and also the currently-disused trackbed of the North London Line, soon to be re-used for another Docklands Light Railway line which will serve Stratford and also Stratford International, on the Channel Tunnel route.
