John Laing
John Laing is a shipwright class bm ketch, specially built to be sailed by young people. She has sailed around the world and was specially chosen by the British Army for an expedition to Antarctica in 2001. The John Laing is operated by the Ocean Youth Trust South from her home base in Southampton, and she takes hundreds of young people on sail training voyages each year. Her size and sturdiness make her the ideal ship to be sailed by young people, but she also offers a challenge for older or more experienced sailors.

Amelie Rose
Amelie Rose was built by Luke Powell in Gweek, Cornwall and is modelled on an early-1800s pilot cutter from the Scillies. Based in north Dorset, she was launched by two people who quit their IT jobs here in London to reconnect people with Britain's maritime heritage and history. She was recently featured in the ITV series The Hungry Sailors.

Rupel
Rupel was intended for a social purpose and was built over a five-year period on the banks of the river Rupel in Belgium by unemployed young people. The project to build the schooner provided them with skills that would help them find jobs more easily. She is now used extensively in work with vulnerable people and as to rehabilitate young people who have become involved in crime. In the summer, Rupel sails the Belgian coastline and takes part in the Tall Ships Races and other events in northern Europe.

From left to right: Challenge Wales, Dasher and Emerald Star
Challenge Wales was launched as one of 12 identical yachts to compete in the world's toughest yacht race, the round-the-world Global Challenge. After taking part in four of the races, she became a training vessel in 2009. In 2012 Challenge Wales was invited to be part of the Queen's Jubilee Thames Pageant, and young people from across Wales were able to sail her up the Thames as part of a special Jubilee voyage. Dasher is a Nicholson 55 boat operated by the Joint Services Adventurous Sail Training Centre in Gosport, which organises sail training expeditions to help members of the Armed Forces to develop character and leadership skills. Emerald Star was launched in 2002 and is one of the smallest ships participating in Tall Ships Festival 2014, with only nine trainees and one permanent crew member. Entered by the China Sail Training Association, this ship plans to find its crew from Chinese students at the University of Plymouth.
