Tolpuddle houses [8]
Numbers 67 and 69 Main Road are probably 18th century. Built with plastered cob walls and a thatched roof. There are extensions on the left and at the rear. Listed, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1155053 The village of Tolpuddle is located alongside the River Piddle is some 7 miles north east of Dorchester and is essentially a commuter village. Formerly astride the A35, the village is now by-passed. The village is renowned as the home of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, six farm labourers led by a Methodist lay preacher who met to form a union to resist reductions in wages.

The village of Tolpuddle is located alongside the River Piddle is some 7 miles north east of Dorchester and is essentially a commuter village. Formerly astride the A35, the village is now by-passed. The village is renowned as the home of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, six farm labourers led by a Methodist lay preacher who met to form a union to resist reductions in wages.

Tolpuddle Old Chapel

Tolpuddle buildings [3]
This former Methodist chapel was built circa 1818 and has been much altered for use as a cow house and store. Constructed of plastered cob on a plinth of brick and flint with brick dressings. Five of the six Tolpuddle Martyrs were Methodists, and it is presumed that they worshipped in this building. Benchmark on Old Methodist Chapel, Tolpuddle
Ordnance Survey benchmark, described on database at http://www.bench-marks.org.uk/bm73157. This is the old Methodist chapel (as opposed to the new which is 100 yards or so eastwards along the High Street). It was used as a place of worship by the Tolpuddle martyrs. In February 2015 the building and site were purchased by a newly formed Building Preservation Trust – The Tolpuddle Old Chapel Trust (TOCT)
