Old mine workings near Cowshill
Seen looking up Weardale from Croft House on the Allendale road, B6295. Weardale is riddled with old mine workings - mostly for lead. The A689 Alston road can be seen in the middle distance.

Greenfield Hush
Stopping at the roadside and looking at this steep sided little valley, I couldn't be sure if it was natural or man-made. The old OS 6" maps provide the answer as this is named as Greenfield Hush, so is definitely the work of lead miners, who if alive today would probably be astonished at how it has blended back into the landscape.

Cast iron post by the B6295, in parish of STANHOPE (WEAR VALLEY District), High Greenfield, Cowshill, 50m South of bridge, on grass verge, on North West side of road. Allendale casting, erected by the Allendale turnpike trust in the 19th century.
