Rear view of Tanfield Leith Farm
This old farm near Tantobie village dates in part to the 17th century. I would think most of the surviving buildings here are early 19th century, but the main house, on the right here, has earlier origins. There has been extensive and sensitive restoration recently.

Front elevation of Tanfield Leith
View of this old farmhouse at Tantobie. Parts of this are supposed to date back to the 17th century, although there must have been many alterations and additions since then. It's rather grand for a farmhouse, and indeed is named Tanfield Leith Hall on earlier O S maps, not farm, as it is at present.

Tanfield Leith farm from the access road
Looking up to the old farmstead of Tanfield Leith along the farm track. This used to be the main road from Tantobie to Tanfield Lea until the late 19th century when a shorter route was made which later became the present B6173.

Ruined outbuildings at Tanfield Leith Farm
This farm at Tantobie is very old, and these old sheds could be 18th century. More probably early 19th however.

Lane behind Tanfield Leith farm
This lane behind the farm is now only an access road, but was once the main road between the villages of Tantobie and Tanfield Lea. This latter village can be seen in the distance.

Gin gang at Tanfield Leith Farm
A restored and converted gin gang at this old farm at Tantobie. This one is hexagonal in shape, a common style. Others can be circular or square. They originally housed a horse engine which drove a threshing machine in the adjacent barn. Usually they date from the late 18th or early 19th centuries. However, this one doesn't appear on the old Ordnance Survey map of 1862 but is shown on the 1896 map, which means it dates from the later 19th century which seems very late.

Renovated gin gang at Tanfield Leith
This old farm at Tantobie has received extensive renovation in recent years. The gin gang here has been converted to part of the residential accommodation. These gin gangs were common in the 19th century and would have housed a horse engine which powered a threshing machine in the adjacent barn. This particular example is late 19th century, from O S map evidence, which makes it a very late one.

Old outbuildings at Tanfield Leith Farm
Dilapidated shed, but looks old and interesting. The lane here was once the main route between the villages of Tantobie and Tanfield Lea.

Old wall beside Tanfield Leith Farm
The back lane beside the farm used to be the main road from Tantobie to Stanley until replaced by the B6173 in the later 19th century. The remains of the old roadside wall here and the stone gate posts could well date back to the 18th century.
