Gin gang at Tanfield Leith Farm

A restored and converted gin gang at this old farm at Tantobie. This one is hexagonal in shape, a common style. Others can be circular or square. They originally housed a horse engine which drove a threshing machine in the adjacent barn. Usually they date from the late 18th or early 19th centuries. However, this one doesn't appear on the old Ordnance Survey map of 1862 but is shown on the 1896 map, which means it dates from the later 19th century which seems very late.
