The area is predominantly rural, with more than half of its residents living in settlements of less than 10,000 people. There are 12 main towns and over 260 small towns and villages, many of which are former colliery villages. The population of the constabulary area is estimated to be 604,900 (ONS mid year estimate 2007), of which 1.2% are from ethnic minority groups

Aaron McKean (Sergeant)

I am the Sergeant in charge of Stanley neighbourhood team. I have worked my whole policing career in response and have recently moved the neighbourhood policing. I will do everything I can to help the local community and to do this I will be working with partner agencies and support services to assist the team in reducing crime and anti-social behaviour in the area

I am a Police Inspector approaching 25 years’ service. I began my career as a constable on front line response working at Consett, then Stanley before spending many years in pretty much every location with Durham Constabulary. I have worked within the training environment mentoring new recruits to degree standard and spent many shifts as a custody Sergeant before joining Stanley and Consett as the Neighbourhood Inspector in May 2025. I remain extremely enthused and motivated to continue the fabulous work the neighbourhood teams and our dedicated partners do to drive performance, protect, and ensure our communities are a safer and more enjoyable place to live.

- Community Protection Warnings have been issued to addresses where unregistered off-road motorbikes are known to be operated from.
- Warning notices issued to houses of suspected individuals using off road bikes.
- Four off road bikes have been seized from Annfield Plain and Dipton that have been causing a nuisance to residents.
- Intelligence building is taking place to identify where these vehicles are being stored/used from to target these individuals, by using community information and links.

- There is ongoing work by Durham County Council (alongside the Police) to introduce traffic calming measures on Loud Bank, Greencroft.
- Plans for a Community Speedwatch Group for the Loud Bank, Greencroft until traffic calming measures are in place. Liaising with The Croft Community School after School holidays.
- Ongoing work to recruit Speedwatch volunteers.

Issues with speeding vehicles within areas surrounding Stanley, such as; New Kyo, Annfield Plain, Catchgate, Harelaw, Dipton, Burnopfield & Tanfield.

- Community Speedwatch has been completed in areas such as; Flint Hill, White-le-Head, New Kyo, Catchgate and Burnopfield.
- The speed camera safety van has also been out throughout the past months in areas such as New Kyo, Annfield Plain, Dipton and Tanfield.
- There is ongoing work by Durham County Council (alongside the Police) to introduce traffic calming measures on Loud Bank, Greencroft.
- Plans for a Community Speedwatch Group for the Loud Bank, Greencroft until traffic calming measures are in place. Liaising with The Croft Community School after School holidays.
- Ongoing work to recruit Speedwatch volunteers.
