Houses built on steep hillside above the River Shuttle and A2.

Although Rochester Drive looks quiet enough, the A2 (East Rochester Way) is just to the left, down the bottom of the slope beyond the trees.

The stretch of the A2 between Falconwood and the Dartford By-pass was built between the Wars and provided considerable local employment during the recession after the First World War. It avoided the congestion through Welling and Bexleyheath which was the route of the old Watling Street. The road was increased to three lanes each way after 1963. This view is of the footbridge which leads across from the south side to Rochester Drive where the houses are located. Road works ahead had closed the coastbound entry at the interchange. A diversion was signed involving going up the A2 towards London to the next interchange and coming back again.

The Rochester Way Relief Road section of the A2 was opened in 1988.
